    • August 10, 1932 - March 5, 2011
    • Viewing Location: 38001 Euclid Avenue, Willoughby, OH 44094
    • Viewings: Tuesday, March 8, from 6:00 until 9:00 PM and Wednesday, March 9 from 10:00 until 11:00 AM
    • Services for Robert D. Fisher, 78, of Cleveland, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Coach Fisher passed away early Saturday morning, March 5, 2011, due to complications from pneumonia.
    • Born in East Chicago, Ind., he was an only child whose father, Donald, died while he was an infant. He relocated to Cleveland in 1942, with his mother, Maria (Fodor) Bookbinder, a former professor at Cleveland State University, who passed away in 1971. He attended East High, where he was an All-City football player, leading to his life's vocation. With several major college scholarship offers, he selected the University of Tennessee, where he played defensive end and was a kick-off specialist.
    • The 1951 Volunteers, on which he was a starter, won the national championship. He also earned All-SEC honors and played in the Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Blue-Gray Football Classic. After serving a tour of active duty in the U.S. Army at Ft. Eustis, Va., he got his first job as a teacher and an assistant football coach in North Canton, Ga. This was the start of his life's work and a career that spanned nearly 40 years, touching thousands of students. From Georgia, he became head coach successively at South Pittsburg, Tenn., McMinnville Central in Tennessee, Grafton Midview, Gatlinburg-Pittman in Tennessee and ultimately Collinwood in 1968.
    • He was an assistant to his brother-in-law and longtime coach Joseph Trivisonno for two years before he took over the head coaching reigns which he held for 24 seasons, winning three city titles. Coach Fisher was respected and loved by his fellow coaches, players and students, building many lifelong friendships. His focus on helping his players be the best people they could be, not just the best players, helped many go on to significant life achievements. With his wife, Judy, he was part of the East Shore United Methodist Church Questers, the Irish American Club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Most recently he enjoyed playing golf with a group of former teachers and coaches and his family. He was also a member of the UT Lettermen's Club.
    • He was the beloved father of Donald M. (Robyn) of Philadelphia, Pa., Robert L. of Cleveland, Michelle Wehrhem (John) of Atlanta, Ga., and David B. of Cleveland. In addition to his children, he is survived by his grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Wehrheim, Aubrey Fisher and Danielle Fisher. He was preceded by the love of his life, Judith (Riley) in 1998; and his grandson, Robert "Bo" Fisher in 2004. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Jan Yandell of East Shore United Methodist Church will officate services.
